The Bakers, a family of 12, move from small-town Illinois to the big city after Tom Baker gets his dream job to coach his alma mater's football team, the Stallions. His wife Kate supports his promotion, but the children object to the move. Meanwhile, Kate also gets her dream offer: to get her book published. While she's away promoting the book, Tom has a hard time keeping the house in order while at the same time coaching his football team, as the once happy family starts falling apart. A younger Baker child, Mark, runs away but father Tom finds him at the railway station the next morning. Everything ends well, as Tom is successful in his new coaching position, and Kate's book stays at number one on the bestseller's list for almost 12 months.

This culminates in a Labor Day Cup competition, with both families competing against each other in games such as three-legged races and egg tosses. All ends well as the eldest Baker daughter goes into labor, and the two families team together to take her to the hospital. And, thus, the Bakers have their first grandchild.
