In "Adoption Day", Tom appeared in two scenes. More information about Rob Meltzer's karate business was shared, and the romantic relationship between Rob and Amy Grant began.
The Good
Tom's Performance: Tom's natural acting talent is so obvious in this episode. He easily portrayed Rob as a confident, caring young man, who knew what he wanted (Amy), and thus pursued her. His smile in his scenes with her was so sweet and so genuine, that viewers were intrigued by this mostly unknown young actor.
Karate Scene: Rob Meltzer was shown at his karate business, teaching his young students. Tom is natural with the children in this scene, and again, he is utterly adorable dressed in full karate gear. Rob asks Amy for a date, and he is appropriately cute and a little awkward in his conversation with her. Amy seems impressed with Rob in this scene, and she was definitely interested in him too.
Rob and Amy in Street Scene: This was Rob and Amy's first date. Their conversation was easy and casual, as Rob talked about his views as a business owner, and Amy talked about her career decisions. Rob also talked about how he tried to empower children with teaching them about karate. They discovered they shared some of the same views about trying to protect children, even though they had chosen very different careers. Amy began to realize that Rob was much more than just a handsome karate instructor!
Rob and Amy Kiss: Their first kiss happened on their first date, in the middle of the street. It was a very sweet moment. With the words, "Did anyone ever tell you, that you look good in winter?" Tom Welling's first memorable onscreen kiss was underway. And, what a sexy, dreamy kiss it was too! If there is ever any doubt about Tom's potential as a romantic leading man, just watch the first few episodes of Judging Amy. Even as a young, inexperienced actor, Tom had loads of onscreen chemistry with his leading lady.
The Bad:
There wasn't really anything bad in relation to Tom's scenes. Even though Tom was a guest star, there just weren't enough scenes with him, and only one Tom/Rob kiss.
Rating: I give "Adoption Day" 4 1/2 out of five stars.
