This episode, instead of being a filler, was pivotal for the rest of the season and was far better than I thought it would be. It set things up for future episodes.
The Good
Clark, Clark, and more Clark!!! Need I say more? It was good to see the 'Man of Steel' stepping into a mature, independent, and self-assured role. He knew what he had to do to help the boy and he did it. He didn't let anyone stand in his way, even Martha. Clark has accepted who he is and is comfortable in his own skin for the first time in his life. It was definitely evident that Clark is now the man of the house. His compassion for Javier was endearing. It was great to see a relaxed Clark.
Clark and Martha: The scenes between these two are always amazing. The one where Clark stands up to his mother when she is getting ready to call the police on the young immigrant was very well done. Clark is indeed an illegal alien himself and challenging Martha with that fact was amazing.
Clark and Lex: This scene was good. Lex's bitterness and anger at Clark showed through and Clark didn't back down in the least or give Lex the benefit of the doubt as he sometimes does. Clark appeared very strong and confident in this scene. He had proof of his allegations this time and Lex couldn't cover it up so easily. Clark had the last word!
Clark and Lana: It was refreshing to see Clark not look like a whipped puppy with Lana. He gave her as good as she gave. Clark did look flustered that Lana wouldn't listen and believe him, but that is nothing new in their relationship. She has always taken other people's word over Clark's. Lana's naïve look at her relationship with Lex and her neediness to believe in someone telling her the truth has colored her perspective. She is a smart girl, but she seems to not be listening to those doubts that are inside her right now. You can see them in her face when she is with Lex and the fact she hasn't answered Lex's proposal yet.
Clark, Chloe & Jimmy: Jimmy is too funny in this scene and Clark looks like he thinks Jimmy is crazy. The scene was priceless. The easy, open relationship between Chloe and Clark is a delight to see. It was a nice touch to see Clark's distress over not being able to do more.
Chloe and Jimmy: Jimmy is hard not to like. His character is really quite amazing and the chemistry between Jimmy and Chloe is adorable. It's not hot, but cute. It will be interesting to see if they take them to boyfriend/girlfriend status. It is interesting that Jimmy thinks that Clark doesn't like him because he is in love with Chloe himself. I wonder if this is a hint of something to come? Hmmmm.
Second scene with Lana and Lex: This scene showed a definite contrast between what Lex thinks and what Lana thinks. They are definitely not on the same page. Lana thinks of power as in terms of helping people and doing good, but Lex knows that power has corrupted him. For a moment there, Lex thought that Lana was with him and the disappointment on his face when she talked about helping people was subtle, but there. He thought he had a partner in his crimes. I saw the crack begin to widen in their relationship. This one is doomed to fail.
Lex in the final scene: This was an incredible scene. Lex walking through the corridor and the music and slow motion added to the evilness of the scene. Lex is evil personified!!
The Bad
The freak of the week: I think there could have been a more developed story with this, but I am guessing that time restraints kept it from being so.
Clark leaving Jed McNally in the field: That was weird, but it seems, after later conversation, that McNally might have been taken to Belle Reve and of course we all know that is how Lex got a hold of him.
First scene between Lana and Lex: Although you could see Lana's doubts about their relationship, it was still an awkward scene. I wondered why they had it in there at all except to send Lana to Amsterdam. The music in this scene was incredibly creepy, it made my skin crawl. Not sure what it meant.
I give 'Subterranean' 4 out of 5 stars.
