Promise was a bittersweet, yet dark and sinister episode. It was also beautifully shot and the colors were fabulous. It did progress a story line or two.

The Good

Clark Kent: It is no surprise that Tom Welling acted perfectly in this episode with the different range of emotions that he had to play. Going from frustration to hopeful then back down to devastated was played extremely well. His desperation to tell Lana his secret to keep her with him was very convincing. You could see clearly everything Clark was thinking the entire time without him saying a word.

Clark and Lana: These two actors, as much as I hate to admit it, have a powerful chemistry on screen. The scenes of them together were riveting. Lana finally finding out Clark's secret was definitely a time to stand up and cheer. After the wedding, when Clark approaches Lana because he needs to know what happened to her was heartbreaking as well as the parting look between them at the end. Kristen was fabulous in the wine cellar watching Clark and Chloe. You could see the emotions and thoughts as the pieces fell into place that Clark was an alien, not a meteor freak. When Lionel mentioned he knew what could kill Clark, you could see another puzzle piece that is Clark fall into place.

Clark and Chloe: Chloe giving Clark a kick in the pants about laying his heart on the line was a great scene. These two have a truly amazing friendship. It is the stuff of legends. Chloe calling Clark the Man of Steel was a great nod to Clark's future. I loved the line, "'Lana is not my hero, Clark, you are."'

Clark and Lex: These two only had one scene together at the end, but the looks said volumes. Lex's expression was 'she's mine now' in a gloating smile just made you want to slap him.

The wedding markers with the time: These kept you on track.

Beginning and Ending sequence: This was a really wonderful idea that was brilliantly shot. The songs used set the tone for the episode as well as brought the scenes together.

Nightmares/Dreams: Each point of view started with that character having a dream or nightmare. Lex's nightmare really makes you wonder what he has really done to Lana.

Clark, Lex, and Lana: Each point of view had subtle differences showing how each person saw that event. These three actors really pulled it off very well.

Lionel: The MB is BACK!!! Lionel used Lana as a pawn to get Lex under his power again. AND he used Clark's secret to do it. I wonder what payback will be for Lex. Lionel was definitely up to his old tricks, but I'm still not sure what his agenda is. I do think, that Lana is not going to take this laying down if the look she gave Lionel when he welcomed her into the family was any indication. She is very angry with him. I also noticed a couple of things. Lionel has been watching Lana and he covered all his bases when he told her he would kill Clark if she didn't go through with the wedding OR told anyone about their conversation. Nice touch, Lionel.

The Bad

Clark's nightmare: Okay, I don't think that anything remotely like this would be circling around in Clark's subconscious. I thought it was actually worse than Lex's nightmare and he definitely deserves his. It was too gruesome for the future Superman.

Clark pining after Lana yet again: Okay, let's put this romance to rest! I actually felt like this was left wide open for these two to get back together. I honestly do NOT see how they can take this and turn it into friendship only. It's gonna take a magician to fix this. This could definitely stunt Clark's growth if the writer's aren't careful.

Conversation with Martha and Clark: I understand she is trying to be understanding, but I thought this scene was too mushy and needed to be more of a tough love approach. I'm not sure this scene was even necessary to the episode. It was totally off base after the scene with Clark and Martha in Crimson.

Fetus: I thought the baby on the monitor when Lana was having her ultrasound was far too developed for Lana not to look pregnant. The baby in the monitor looked to be between seven to nine months and I'm sorry, Lana doesn't look like she is pregnant at all. Go figure...

I give 'Promise' 3 out of 5 stars.
